Alice Springs has changed a lot since I was there 23 years ago. When I saw it last it was a 2 street town and now it is a small city, where you need a map to find your way around and has the busy Todd Mall at the centre. We spent 2 afternoons walking around the mall area, looking at the many aboriginal art shops and stopping for coffee and cake. Alice Springs seems like a good place to buy aboriginal art although we didn't buy anything. On Saturday morning they have a market in the Todd Mall where you could pick up a bargain art piece from individual aborigines selling their paintings. We stayed 2 nights in Alice Springs. |
Von den westlichen MacDonnell Ranges kommen wir nach Alice Springs etwa 500 km von Uluru entfernt. Alice Springs ist ein Mekka für aboriginal Kunst. Hier gibt es eine Gallerie nach der anderen und man findet jede Menge unterschiedlicher Stile von aboriginal Gemälden. Will man ins internet, dann muss man nur ins Pub gehen und ist über die LiveCam im internet zu finden. Bei den vielen Cafes haben wir kein Problem einen guten Kaffee zu finden und abends wird man mit Live Musik verwöhnt. |

From Alice Springs we also drove out to the East MacDonnell Ranges. There are less tourists here, because it's drier and there are usually no permanent waterholes. We went out to Emily Gap, Jesse Gap and Corroboree Rock. They were nice areas. Corroboree Rock was interesting and is an important aboriginal site where initiation of young men are carried out. |
Östlich von Alice Springs verlaufen die östlichen MacDonnell Ranges. Es gibt schöne Plätze, jedoch sind die Wasserlöcher der westlichen MacDonnel Ranges eine harte Konkurrenz. Diese interessante Formation von Fels auf dem Foto ist eine rituelle Stätte. Jungen werden hier zu Männern gemacht - rituell, was auch immer das heisst. |

We drove south after Alice Springs down the Stuart Highway into South Australia and eventually to New South Wales and back to the The Entrance near Sydney. My mother was recovering in hospital so we were anxious to get back, but still wanted to see some things along the way. One place where we stopped was Rainbow Valley which is a picturesque rock formation about 25 km off the Stuart Highway. We continued driving south until Marlee where we followed the Oodnadatta Track 700 km to Roxby Downs. |
Nach einem Ölwechsel und einem neuen Ölfilter geht es in den Süden. Wir bleiben über Nacht bei Redbank Waterhole was wie so viele staubtrocken ist. Ein kleiner Abstecher führt uns zu Rainbow Valley. Hier wurden einige Filme gedreht. In Regenzeiten ist die ebene Fläche mit Wasser gefüllt. Es muss wunderschön sein, wenn sich der bunte Fels im Wasser spiegelt. Bis auf den kleinen Abstecher sind wir auf Asphaltstrassen unterwegs. |

We continued driving south until Marla, where we followed the Oodnadatta Track 700 km to Roxby Downs. The Oodnadatta Track is dirt road, but it was generally in excellent condition. |
Der Asphalt endet mit unserer Abzweigung von Marla auf den Oodnadatta Track. Hiermit verlassen wir das 'Northern Territory' und kommen nach South Australia. |
