Top 10
This page contains what we consider to be the top 10 places we saw in Australia during our year travel. They are not listed in order of preference. We saw so many beautiful places, but these are highlights of the trip.
Cape York - This was one of the absolute highlights of our whole trip. Driving the Old Telegraph Line (OTL) 4WD track with 18 creek crossings and the northern most tip of Australia. To make it even better we also met Wolfgang, Birgit and Louisa.
Waychinicup National Park - A small National Park near Albany, WA. There is something spiritual about this place. After spending 4 days here we asked ourselves why we were leaving. We convinced ourselves that we would find other places just as good or better along the way - but there is not many places better than Waychinicup.
Bungle Bungle National Park - The gorges here are fantastic. Amazing place of earth colours. Echidna Gorge at noon must be experienced.
Ningaloo Reef - One of the most economical and relaxing ways to see coral reefs in Australia. Coral reefs just off the beach with thousands of fish. The boat cruises from Exmouth are very reasonable. Swam with Manta-rays and saw whales, turtles and sharks.
Karijini National Park - fantastic gorges narrowing down to less than shoulder width and then opening up to beautiful swimming holes. The rock formations are impressive.
Gibb River Road - we drove the Gibb River Road at the wrong time of year at the end of the Dry Season - so many of the waterfalls were no longer flowing, but it still makes our top 10 list. All the gorges and Mitchell Plateau are just magnificent. Next time we do it will be just after the Wet Season - the best time. It must be absolutely amazing.
Broome - for the small quiet town, Cable Beach and Town Beach.
Tasmania - The whole of Tasmania is wonderful. So many things to see and do in such a small place. The landscape changes by the minute here, along with the weather. Be prepared for wind, rain and sunshine. The wind and rain tested us, but it still easily made our top 10. Don't miss the walk to Cape Huoy early in the morning.
Eyre Peninsula, South Australia - The whole Eyre Peninsula was great, Lincoln National Park at the tip would have to be the highlight. Crystal clear water and isolated beaches. We were lucky to have Memory Cove to ourselves for 3 days except for the resident seal. Amazing southern coast line.
Esperance, Western Australia - It was the fishing and the surrounding area of Esperance that hit our top 10. This is where Regina started fishing. Catching 10 fish in half an hour is fun. The coast line east of Esperance includes Cape Arid National Park and Cape Le Grand National Park and adds to the great memories of Esperance. Also the afternoon boat trip with Stuart.
