After the 2 flat tyres we were running a little late into the afternoon, so we camped overnight at Robinson River before driving on the next day to Borroloola.  In Borroloola we picked up some basic supplies and fuel and had a coffee at the service station cafe.  They had a sign stating "The only cappuccino within 300 km".  We always have great coffee with us, but also love to sit and drink a coffee.  Make a note when travelling this way, that at Borroloola they have coffee to rival any of the best cafes in Sydney or Melbourne.  From Borroloola we continued along the Savannah Way towards Roper Bar.  We heard from other people that Lorella Springs was a nice camping place with hot thermal springs.  It was 30 km of the road for 4WD, but it was well worth it.  Lorella Springs is on a 1 million acre pastoral property, and is an oasis in the middle of nowhere.  We stayed 2 nights.  There is not much to do here except relax and enjoy sitting in the 34 degrees Celsius thermal springs.  A sign at the entrance to the camp ground said, "Welcome to Paradise".  So it was.  It was the ideal cure for so many flat tyres.

Nach diesen ungeplanten Stops waren wir froh über eine camping Möglichkeit beim Robinson River. Dort haben wir auch Bill und Rosemarie getroffen, die unsere Strapazen mit einer guten Flasche Rotwein gemildert haben. Vielen Dank an dieser Stelle!  Der nächste Ort war Borroloola wo wir unsere Vorräte aufstocken konnten. Nach einem guten Kaffee - dem einzigen für die nächsten 300 km - ging es auf noch schlechterer Schotterstrasse weiter. Uns wurde empfohlen bei Lorella Springs zu übernachten. Ein Schild 'Willkommen im Paradies' grüsst in der Einfahrt. Wir stellen unser Zelt auf und testen die heissen Quellen. Das 34 Grad warme Wasser macht es uns nicht schwer ins Wasser zu gehen und wir bleiben dort für den Rest vom Nachmittag. Wir sind hier mitten in trockenem Land mit staubigen Schotterstrassen - eine Oase mitten im Nirgendwo. Den nächsten Tag verbringen wir bis auf ein paar Pausen zum Essen fast ausschliesslich im und um das Wasser. Nach gleich zwei platten Reifen muss man sich schon etwas gönnen.

After 2 days relaxing at Lorella Springs we continued north along the Savannah Way.  There were a few things to see along the way including, a walk through the Southern Lost City.  That was an impressive 1.5 hour walk.  It is like walking through a land of stone giants.  You get the feeling that they are people of an ancient time.

Nicht weit entfernt von Lorella Springs haben wir die südliche Lost City besucht. Diese durch Erosion stehengebliebenen Sandsteinpfeiler sind sehr beeindruckend. Bei einem 1.5 Stunden Rundwanderweg konnten wir uns diese riesigen steifen 'Figuren' näher ansehen. Der Weg hat teilweise Ähnlichkeit mit einem Hindernislauf. 

We made a short stop in Roper Bar which was a bit of a non-event unless you are fishing with a boat.  It's a famous place for Barramundi fishing.  We drove further towards Mataranka and made a bush camp along the road.  As soon as we hit the Stuart Highway running between Alice Springs and Darwin, we were swarmed by cars and 4WD with caravans in-tow.  Yeh we were back in tourist town.  Mataranka is a popular spot for the hot thermal springs.  We stayed away from the bigger crowds and went to the quieter Bitter Springs.  That was amazing.  Crystal clear water at 34 degrees Celsius.  The best way to experience the springs is to snorkel along a stretch of about 100 metres, weaving your way through and underwater fairy-tale forest.  All the mosses and tree roots are like pictures from a fairy-tale story.  Bitter Springs was great.

Wir befinden uns hier im Land der Krokodile aber auch im Land der Barramundi. Diese Fische schmecken, besonders am Griller zubereitet sehr fein. Mit den Krokodilen im Wasser ist es besser ein Boot zu haben. Wir haben an einem dieser Flüsse eine kleine Rast eingelegt und auf der Sandinsel mitten im Fluss zuerst ein Krokodil und bei näherem Hinschauen gleich 4 Krokodile entdeckt. Ist schon unheimlich diese einzigartigen aber lebensgefährlichen Kreaturen so nahe zu sehen. Wir gingen auch schwimmen aber nicht in den Krokodil besetzten Flüssen sondern in Bitter Springs eine Thermalquelle mit 34 Grad in Mataranka. Das Wasser ist unglaublich klar. Man kann sich auf einem Abschnitt durchs Wasser treiben lassen und die moosbewachsenen Wurzeln und Pflanzen unter Wasser betrachten. Gegen die Strömung bei dieser Temperatur zu schwimmen ist recht anstrengend!

The next stop was Katherine.  I was here 22 years ago and it was a lot smaller.  Other than that I remember seeing the Gorge.  Now Katherine is a thriving town with all conveniences.  We stayed here a few days to recover a little bit from the driving and to see Katherine Gorge.  We actually spent a whole day just relaxing and then another 2 days in Katherine Gorge.  The first day in the Gorge we went canoeing and the next day we did a full day tour,  There are a total of 13 Gorges.  It is possible to see the first 5 gorges with a full day tour.  We only saw the first 2 gorges with the canoe trip.  It is really spectacular.  If you ever get here then go for the full day tour.  It is really good with plenty of time to swim and relax.  We had a fantastic day.

Endlich sind wir in Katherine, seit Cairns die erste richtige Stadt wo ich den sechsten Band von Harry Potter kaufen kann. In den nächsten Tagen wird gelesen!! Die grösste Attraktion in Katherine ist Katherine Gorge. Katherine River fliesst in diesem Bereich durch eine Schlucht, die durch Verengungen in 13 Schluchten auf 13 Kilometer aufgeteilt ist. Um die Schönheit dieser Schluchten zu geniessen kann man das zu Fuss, mit dem Kanu oder mit einer Tour auf dem Schiff machen. Wir waren zuerst einen halben Tag mit dem Kanu bis in die zweite Schlucht unterwegs und haben bei einer Tagestour fünf Schluchten per Schiff und zu Fuss erkundet. Der Kanutrip war genial aber ziemlich anstrengend.  

There is some interesting aboriginal art work in the gorges, freshwater crocodiles and breath-taking scenery.  A barbeque lunch was included in the tour.  We swam with the freshwater crocodiles and took many more photos than we could include here.  I think it is the first real full day tour we have done since we started travelling.

Der Tagesausflug war eine gute Kombination von Schiff, zu Fuss, Aboriginal Rockmalerei, schwimmen und gegrilltem Mittagessen. Auch hier gibt es SüsswasserKrokodile mit denen wir geschwommen sind. Man muss sich nur um die Salzwasserkrokodile Sorgen machen und die gibt es hier nicht.
