05 October, 2005 - 07 October, 2005 - Eighty Mile Beach - Port Hedland
After spending what seemed to be a lifetime in Broome we headed off to continue our journey along the west coast of Australia. We still had to pick up a few supplies in Broome and also managed a coffee and cake. But then we headed south along the coast to Eighty Mile Beach. Now, Cable Beach in Broome is long but Eighty Mile Beach is endless. The tides are also massive here. We were privileged to get the low tide on sunset, which provides some excellent views across the mud flats. You can tell they are mud flats by the degree to which your feet sink. It's extremely fine, clean sand - perfect for beauty treatments. We stayed at Eighty Mile Beach for 2 nights before moving on to Port Hedland. We relaxed and did some fishing and I rebuilt our 2nd battery set-up in the Troopy. |

Port Hedland is a mining town, with not alot to see, but it was a good point to stop before driving into Karijini National Park. The buildings and houses in Port Hedland are typical for a mining town. The most interesting thing there is the salt mining. A natural ocean process is used to manufacture salt in high volumes. From the town lookout tower you can see the huge mounds of salt waiting to be shipped out of the harbour. |
