18 September, 2005 - 04 October, 2005 - Derby - Broome - James Price Point

We got into Derby at dusk.  We don't normally drive at dusk but we had a big day driving the corrugations down to Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek and we didn't feel like camping overnight at Lennard River.  Derby is a small town.  After we had set the tent up, we walk down town and got something to eat and then went into one of the local pubs.  As we were sipping our drinks, a guy came over and started chatting with us.  He was the driver of a bus service that runs daily between Derby and Kununurra along the Gibb River Road.  He knew all the people we had met along the Gibb River Road.  We talked to him for about an hour.  We also met some of the other people he knew in the pub.  Fortunately, Regina couldn't understand all that was said - it was a bit rough !  We happened to choose the roughest pub in Derby for a drink, but it was a lot of fun.  The other things to do in Derby are walk and drive along the wharf and take in a picture at the outdoor cinema.  The outdoor cinema looked really good, but we got there too late after arriving in Derby to join the movie playing.  The setting reminded me of the Italian film "Cinema Paradiso".  The wharf is interesting and lots of people go down to watch the sunset over the bay.  Derby has the highest tides in Australia and maybe the world.  At more than 10 metres height difference between high and low tide it is phenomenal.

After spending a couple of days in Derby we moved on to Broome.  We knew we could go swimming at the beach in Broome.  Broome was great.  It's a great relaxing spot for a holiday and lots of people are moving here, by the looks of the housing development.  I think the main thing to do in Broome is to hang out on Cable Beach - a 30 km long stretch of sand paradise.  You can also do a Camel Ride along the beach - sunset is the best time.  The last camel is always closely followed by the poo-collector so that no ugly mess is left behind on the sidewalk while they march to and from the beach.  Tools of the trade are a bright highly visible orange T-shirt, a plastic bag, rubber gloves and a little spade.  I was contemplating taking a job as a Camel-Poo collector, but fortunately, got a much better job offer from my previous employer, while in Broome.

Von Derby geht es weiter nach Broome. .

We stayed a couple of nights in Broome and then headed north, to some fee camping spots at James Price Point.  When we arrived here we just said, "Wow !"  It was amazing coast line.  Red cliffs, beautiful sand, rocks at low tide and green-aqua-blue water at high tide.  We camped 2 nights here and were mostly the only ones on the beach.  It was a paradise.

While at James Price Point I did an oil change on the Troopy, and while under the car I noticed some grease leaking from the swivel joint behind the front wheel.  So we returned to Broome to get I checked out.  While in Broome we went to the Sun Pictures open-air Garden Cinema.  It's a great atmosphere.  The first film we saw was "My Summer of Love" and then "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".   "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was not so good, but because it was an earlier session the planes were still flying into the airport, which is just beside the town centre.  The planes coming into land directly overhead were more entertaining than the movie.  But the Garden Cinema is a must-do in Broome.
