After a totally relaxing 3 days watching platypus in Eungella, we continue back to the coast to busy Airlie Beach. Airlie Beach is full of backpackers doing snorkelling and reef tours from nearby Shute Harbour. Shute Harbour is the main access harbour for the Whitsunday Islands. I have been here a few times before and knew there were standby rates for overnight stays on some islands. This is really the only reason we came down here - to check out some prices. And we were in luck. South Molle Island had very reasonable rate of $98 per person for full board and room, plus transfers. So we left the Troopy for 3 days to experience the life of a the rich and famous. The night before going to South Molle we spent in Airlie Beach and saw a possum in the caravan park. Very cute native animals but very sharp teeth and claws. |
Von Eungella National Park mit den süssen Platypus geht es wieder an die Küste nach Airlie Beach. Airlie Beach und Shute Harbour sind ein perfekter Ausgangspunkt um auf eine der nahegelegenen Whitsundays Inseln zu kommen. Vor Ort gibt es 'standby' Preise die sich wirklich auszahlen. Wir entscheiden uns für zwei Nächte auf South Mole Island für $ 98 pro Person pro Nacht mit Vollpension und Transport. Unseren Troupy können wir leider nicht mitnehmen. Kaum zu glauben, laufen uns doch tatsächlich Frank und Jeanet aus Holland wieder über den Weg. Wir haben sie in Alice Springs getroffen und jetzt wieder hier. Nach einem sehr netten Erfahrungsaustausch ist ein Possum von unserer heissen Schokolade angezogen. Possums sind nachtaktive Tiere die sehr neugierig sein können aber auch scharfe Krallen und Zähne haben. |

We started our 3 days/2 nights from Shute Harbour on the boat at 10 am. We were given a quick island introduction from the South Molle staff and a welcome drink. Arriving at 10 am we had plenty of time to explore the island a bit before returning in the late afternoon for another free welcoming drink. By this time we were well on the way to a good dinner and a good night sleep. After we had arrived, I showed Regina the native customs of finding coconuts under the coconut palms and opening them on the coconut spike in the island resort. We collected about 6 coconuts and what we didn't eat on South Molle we took with us. |
Wir sind reif für die Insel. Es ist sehr komisch das Auto einfach stehen zu lassen und alles was man braucht in Taschen zu packen. Mit der Anreise am Vormittag und der Rückreise am Nachmittag haben wir drei Tage auf der Insel vor uns. Karl zeigt mir ganz begeistert, wie man eine Kokosnuss öffnet. Das Resort hat einen eigenen 'Kokosnussöffner' aufgestellt. Dieser Spitz ist nötig um die äussere Schale zu entfernen und das ist gar nicht so einfach. Ich war etwas skeptisch die Kokosnuss zu essen - es kann recht langweilig schmecken, aber so ganz frisch kann man das nicht vergleichen. Die Milch ist extrem süss und das Fruchtfleisch ist richtig saftig - zum Süchtig werden!. |

South Molle Island is just paradise. In my opinion it is one of the best islands in the Whitsundays, both for value and things to do. The resort is low key and quiet and the rest of the island is a National Park, where you can walk over the whole island. The longest track across the island is about 4.7 km long. This includes superb views, great forests and secluded beaches. After the bush walks, we came back the resort for a swim and a drink by the pool. |
South Mole Island ist eine sehr kleine Insel mit einem Resort im Norden und einigen Wanderwegen. Der längste Wanderweg ist 4.7 km lang und alle davon führen zu einer schönen Bucht zum Schnorcheln. Die Insel ist ein National Park wodurch die Schönheit bewahrt wird. Neben den Stränden gibt es Wälder, Fledermäuse, Schmetterling kollonien, jede Menge von sehr interessant geformten Spinnen und natürlich auch Schlangen - harmlose. |

One of the highlights of South Molle was the coral and fish that we saw off the beaches. Amazing ! The tours from Airlie Beach were charging about $150 for a day trip to the reef and we were seeing coral like this just off the beach. The reef tours do see much better coral on the outer reefs, but we were more than satisfied with what South Molle offered at our leisure just off the beach from where we were sunbaking. No comments about the coral. Just look at the pictures and imagine how it was having all this to ourselves. |
South Mole Island ist im Great Barrier Reef. Das gibt wunderbare Gelegenheiten Korallen zu sehen. Rund um die Insel wurde einiges beschädigt bzw. viele Korallen sind abgestorben. Ein paar Kostproben sind unten zu finden, was wir gesehen haben. Man kann hier wirklich Tage und Wochen verbringen, nur mit Schnorcheln. Das einzige, was uns aus dem Wasser getrieben hat ist die Temperatur. Nur mit Schwimmsachen wird einem doch nach einer Weile kalt. Neben den Korallen haben wir jede Menge verschiedene Fische gesehen. Der bunt schimmernde Fisch ist ein Parrotfisch - bunt wie ein Papagei. Angeblich sind Parrotfische nicht nur schön anzusehen sondern schmecken auch sehr gut. Wir haben uns mit dem Betrachten begnügt und uns daran erfreut. |

Every day at 10 am on South Molle Island they have a fish feeding which involves throwing bread over the side of the pier. The best place to observe the fish feeding is in the water among the fish. There were heaps of fish. I went snorkelling to take some underwater photos. Most of the time the fish were just too close to get a good photo and backing up in the water to increase the distance proved quite difficult. Some of the larger Bat Fish we could actually pick up and hold out of the water for a few seconds, before letting them swim off again. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a photo when we were holding the Bat Fish. |
Eine weitere sehr gute Gelegenheit Fische zu sehen war bei der täglichen Fischfütterung. Vom Steg wird Toastbrot ins Wasser geworfen und im Wasser stehend fressen die Fische einem aus der Hand. Wirklich unglaublich waren die 'bat' Fische mit 70 cm Länge und 40 cm Höhe. Mit fressen abgelenkt, konnte man die bat Fische einfach aus dem Wasser heben. Sie halten für ein paar Sekunden still und sind dann wieder heilfroh im Wasser zu sein. Manche Fische sind halb durchsichtig und dadurch wirklich nur sehr schwer im Wasser zu sehen. |

We took our snorkelling gear to South Molle, which was extremely useful. The last time we really used it was in Western Australia. But we used it quite a lot on the island. It was the best way to go snorkelling. When you go out on a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef, you are on a boat with sometime hundreds of people. We had the beaches to ourselves and even if the coral is better on the outer reef, there is nothing more relaxing than snorkelling off the beach and then having a sunbake afterwards. |
Wir haben es uns so richtig gut gehen lassen. Schnorcheln im Meer, schwimmen im Pool, relaxen im whirlpool und dann noch ein Cocktail - man gönnt sich ja sonst nichts. Glücklicherweise waren nicht so viele Leute auf der Insel und wir hatten die Strände jeweils so gut wie für uns alleine. Im australischen Sommer - wir haben ja jetzt Winter - kann man im Meer nicht schwimmen wegen der tödlichen Quallen. Von Juni bis September gibt es keine Quallen - zumindest keine von den gefährlichen. |

The second day on the island we packed our picnic lunch which we ordered from the kitchen (full board - all inclusive remember) and walked over to Oyster Bay. The walk was about 3 km and wandered through forest with fruit bats and then hundreds of butterflies. It was like a fairytale forest. Butterflies everywhere. Eventually we made it to Oyster Bay and went snorkelling in the channel off the beach. From above Oyster Bay looked absolutely wonderful and it was. We went snorkelling in the bay shown below in the photo, and after ate our picnic lunch on the beach. Sitting down to lunch we saw something in the water and on closer examination counted 6 black-tip sharks about 1.5 metres in length swimming where we had been snorkelling. I am just glad we didn't see them when we were in the water. We watched them for about 1 hour as they scouted around for food. |
Nachdem wir am ersten Tag unser Mittagessen am Buffet genossen haben liessen wir uns für den zweiten Tag ein Lunchpaket einpacken. Von 6 Sandwich können wir zwei Tage leben. Mit Wasser und Essen ausgestattet erkunden wir die Insel. Von einem Lookout zu Oyster Bay. Natürlich haben wir unsere Flossen und Taucherbrillen eingepackt und schnorcheln für eine Weile in der Bucht. Bei dem stärkenden Mittagessen am Strand geniessen wir die Stille und können unseren Augen nicht trauen als wir eigenartige Finnen im Wasser schwimmen sehen. Nur ein paar wenige Meter von uns entfernt schwimmen Haie. Wir konnten 6 Stück gleichzeitig zählen. Black-tip Haie mit einer Länge von 1.5 Metern. Es ist wunderschön die Haie zu beobachten, vom Strand aus wohlgemerkt. Beim Schnorcheln im Wasser wäre das ganze nicht so lustig gewesen |

The last day on South Molle, we walked 4.5 km across the island to Sandy Bay and ate lunch. We needed to catch the 3 pm boat back to Shute Harbour, but we had time for a quick snorkel and a picnic lunch in Sandy Bay before heading back to the resort. It was a great way to end a fantastic 3 days on a tropical island. We had collected coconuts and opened them, so we had fresh coconut to nibble on - enough to last us for the next few weeks. |
Nach der Hai Begegnung haben wir uns am letzten Tag mehr auf das Wandern konzentriert und sind an das südliche Ufer spaziert. Eine kurze Schnorchelrunde zum Abschluss und dann eine köstliche Kokosnuss zur Nachspeise. South Mole Island ist wirklich eine sehr schöne und vor allem ruhige Insel. Wir hätten es gar nicht besser treffen können, als auf diese tropische Insel zu kommen. |

The parting images of South Molle was the resort palm lined beach. There are cabins lining the beach front but you don't see them. South Molle resort is quite invisible from the outside, which makes it really pleasant. There is no high-rise apartment hotel resort buildings. Everything is on ground level and sort of hidden in the trees. There are lots of birds around and other wildlife like some snakes we also saw. Naturally being a resort the birds also like to sip on a cocktail from the bar once in a while ! |
Das Resort hat neben der täglichen Fischfütterung auch eine tägliche Vogelfütterung. Das ist wahrscheinlich auch der Grund, warum die 'rainbow lorriket' und andere Vögel an Menschen gewöhnt sind. Man muss schon recht auf der Hut sein wenn man sein Essen auch essen will. Neben Wurst und Fleisch mögen die bunten Vögel sehr gerne Kakao, zumindest beim Kaffee wird man alleine gelassen. Es kann schon vorkommen, dass einem ein Papagei auf der Schulter landet um einen besseren Überblick über das Essen am Tisch zu haben. |

After catching the boat back to Shute Harbour we stayed one more night in Airlie Beach before driving up to Townsville the next day. It was nice to get back to our tent and Troopy, even after spending 3 days in tropical paradise. |
Ein letzter Blick auf die grüne Insel und das durch Palmen gut versteckte Resort - es geht wieder ans Festland. Nach wunderbaren Tagen auf dieser tropischen Insel freuen wir uns wieder auf unseren Troupy und unser Zelt. |
