After the Jardine River ferry crossing there was still a few more kilometres to drive until we reached Bamaga and Seisa. These are the 2 northern most towns in Australia. We did some basic supply shopping and stayed overnight at Seisa before driving to the Cape York tip and Punsand Bay where we camped and relaxed for a further 3 nights. It is still about 1.5 hours to get to the tip of Cape York from Seisa. The last couple of kilometres is a walk along the rocky headland offering spectacular ocean views to the north, east and west. Simply breath-taking ! |
In Bamaga haben wir wieder an Früchten und Gemüse aufgestockt und sind weiter nach Seisa gefahren um Wolfgang, Birgit und Louisa zu treffen. Es sind doch noch ein paar Kilometer bis an das wirkliche Cape York, den nördlichsten Punkt vom australischen Festland zu fahren. Die Aussicht belohnt die Strapazen. Der Strand wird von Palmen eingerahmt und von den Felsen sieht man die nahe gelegenen Thorres Strait Inseln. Man hat eine Sicht in den Norden, Osten und Westen - atemberaubend. |

So first comes Regina followed by Louisa and Birgit. I must admit, we had a perfect day and great company with Wolfgang, Birgit and Louisa. It was a long drive up to Cape York. The OTL track was fantastic and the corrugated dirt roads were sometime stressful, but the reward at the tip is spectacular. |
Der wirklich nördlichste Punkt muss sich erst verdient werden. Im australischen Winter um die 30 Grad geht es über die kargen Felsen bis zum Spitz. Die nahegelegenen Inseln sehen teilweise wie zum Festland gehörend aus, was den Weg länger aussehen lässt. Glücklicherweise haben wir Ebbe, wodurch wir bis zum Schild gehen können. |

At the tip there is a sign to inform you that you have made it, just in case some people try to keep walking. Off the tip are some small islands, and we were lucky enough to have dolphins swimming around. We did the must do thing and clambered round the pole for the inevitable photo. |

The beaches to the west of the peninsula have very gentle slopes and mixed with the high tides, shows large expanses of beach when the tide goes out. It's great for taking photos. One of the best things they say about the beaches up here is you don't have to be too worried about sharks, because the crocodiles eat them all ! Yep there is Crocs - and they are Salties - so we didn't go swimming on the beaches. We just did some fishing and stood back from the water's edge. |
Wir haben Glück und dürfen nicht nur die tolle Aussicht geniessen sondern können auch Delfine beobachten wie sie um das Cape schwimmen. Das Wasser ist ganz nah und würde sehr zum Schwimmen verlocken aber daraus wird nichts. Um Haie muss man sich hier nicht wirklich Sorgen machen. Haie gibt es keine mehr, da die Krokodile alle gefressen haben. Diesen Salzwasserkrokodilen wollen wir auf keinen Fall zu nahe kommen.. |

After walking to the tip, we drove out to Punsand Bay camp ground. Originally we booked in for 1 night but ended up staying 3 nights. We didn't do much. Just recovered for the drive back, sat around the camp fire every night, playing guitar and chatting with Wolfgang, Birgit and Louisa. The track into Punsand Bay was quite sandy and washed out, but no problem. Regina and I did some fishing one afternoon and and got up early to try our luck. We didn't catch anything, but with sunrises like the photo below it was worth getting up early. |
Weiter geht es nach Punsand Bay, wo wir unser Zelt aufschlagen. Die Strassen sind natürlich alles Schotterstrassen und teilweise recht ausgewaschen und ausgefahren. Man kann nur erahnen wie das Land hier in der Regenzeit aussehen muss. Spuren von tief ausgekerbten Bächen am Strassenrand deuten auf einiges an Wasser hin. Ein WahnsinnsCampingplatz direkt am Meer mit Blick auf die nahegelegenen Inseln ist perfekt zum Ausspannen. Eigentlich wollten wir nur eine Nacht bleiben, haben aber bald auf drei Nächte verlängert. |

So, I did take some beautiful photos of Punsand Bay, but when selecting the photos that make it to our travel site, I couldn't go past these. The first one is our camp site at Punsand Bay (Bremach on the left - our tent on the right), and the second is Karl and Regina fishing and being careful of the crocodiles swimming in the water ("Never Smile at a Crocodile"). Louisa hat sich unter anderem auch künstlerisch betätigt. So tolle Zeichnungen konnten wir Euch natürlich nicht vorenthalten. Auf dem linken Bild ist unser Zeltplatz zu sehen mit Bremach - tolles Auto von Wolfgang, Birgit und Louisa - links und unser rotes Zelt rechts. Auf dem rechten Bild sind Karl und ich beim Fischen am Strand Karl mit Bart und ich mit Hut, das Krokodil nicht zu übersehen. Ein grosses Dankeschön an die Künstlerin Louisa! |

Punsand Bay was also a test for our Deep Cycle Battery. The car stood still for 2 whole days (therefore no battery re-charge), and we were so relaxed I told Regina she could charge the camera battery. That was too much. It was a little too flat after the 2 days. The battery drew so much current to re-charge, that when we started driving again, the cable had a slight melt down. Not anything major, but I had to disconnect the second battery until we got to Weipa and could make a new cable. So the last day at Punsand Bay we just spent around the camp site which was directly on the beach. It's a hard life ! |
Punsand Bay oder die Reise nach Cape York war ein guter Test für unsere zweite Batterie. Nachdem wir zwei Tage mit dem Auto nicht gefahren sind, war die zweite Batterie sehr tief entladen. Bei einem Ausflug haben wir dafür leider bezahlen müssen. Wir waren nur ein paar Kilometer unterwegs als dieser verbrannte Gummigeruch immer penetranter wurde. Das UHF und auch der Kühlschrank liessen sich nicht mehr einschalten und nach genauer Untersuchung haben wir auch den 'Kabelbrand' gefunden. Anscheinend wurde zuviel Strom von der Lichtmaschine gezogen was das Kabel nicht ausgehalten hat. Genauer ansehen können wir uns das erst in Weipa wo wir hoffentlich einen Autoelektriker finden. |
