So driving south again, we headed to Weipa and Wolfgang, Birgit and Louisa headed down to the east coast, direction Cairns. It was a sad departure from our new friends, but we hope to see them again in Australia and in Germany - they live a few hours from the Swiss Rheintal ! We arrived in Weipa and spent 3 nights there. We were not very impressed with Weipa, but it had all the services and we could get the necessary cables and supplies to fix the burnt out battery cable. The Auto Electrician in Weipa was great. Gave us lots of info on the trip down to Normanton. Once we had the cable repaired, we were on our way south again. Birgit had given Regina a bread recipe to make in the camp oven, so on our first camp site we made a fire and tested it out. Just a touch burnt on one side, but delicious. |
Nach den wunderbaren Tagen auf dem Cape York trennten sich unsere Wege. Für Wolfgang, Birgit und Louisa geht es in Richtung Cairns und für uns in Richtung Westen. Schweren Herzens und nach einem 'Never Smile At A Crocodile' Lied machen wir uns auf nach Weipa. Nach den tollen Erlebnissen der letzten Tage waren wir von Weipa nicht so beeindruckt. Weipa ist vor allem eine Bergbaustadt - Comalco. Wir freuten uns über ein Cafe und konnten Ersatzteilmässig alles nötige finden. Unser Troupy ist mit einem neuen Kabel ausgestattet um die Batterie wieder zu laden. Die Batterie war nur total leer und ist nach einem Tag laden wieder voll und Einsatzbereit. Ein Rezept zum Brotbacken, dass wir von Birgit bekommen haben, mussten wir natürlich bei der nächsten Gelegenheit ausprobieren. Den Teig in den Campoven und dann ins Feuer - schmeckt fantastisch! |

We headed cross country down to Normanton from just south of the Musgrave Roadhouse to Dunbar and on to Normanton. It was a relaxing drive along a track which crossed the Mitchell River and then met the Burke Development Road just south of Dunbar. We camped on the banks of the Mitchell River and then drove the Burke Development Road down to Normanton and Karumba. |
Bei der Fahrt in den Süden von Cape York haben wir die Umfahrungsstrasse genommen. Man kann sich das etwa so vorstellen, als wäre die Strasse ein riesiges Waschbrett. Nach diesem Geschüttel und Gerüttel waren wir dankbar über eine langsame aber ruhige Strasse durch sehr romantisches Gelände bis zum Mitchel River mit einem tollen Platz zum Zelten. |

Dunbar is a huge Cattle Station and the Burke Development Road passed through a lot of the cattle territory. The cattle stations up here would make Switzerland look small. We saw lots of cattle. Not many cars up here, but you have to watch out for the cattle. They are very unpredictable and roam around the unfenced fields. It's just too expensive to fence and maintain such big areas. Our intention was to drive to Karumba, but we came across a strange couple in a normal car with no petrol. They had driven from Cairns along the Burke Development Road against the advice of others. They were on their way to Darwin and had no water, no food, no luggage, no map and had run out of petrol. We couldn't help them with petrol so we towed them 40 km to Normanton. Sometimes I wonder how people survive every day life when they can't even prepare themselves with a map to see where they are driving. |
Unser Ziel war Karumba und Normanton aber bis dahin gab es einige Kilometer einsamer Strasse zu bewältigen. Die entgegenkommenden Autos kann man an einer Hand abzählen, nicht jedoch die Rinderherden. Zur Abwechslung beim Fahren tragen die unzähligen 'Gates' bei, die Tiere innerhalb einer Farm halten sollen. Am Strassenrand stand ein normales Auto - kein Allrad - mit leerem Benzintank. Das junge Pärchen aus Cairns war auf einer Schotterstrasse nach Darwin unterwegs mit einem normalen Auto, kein Wasser, keine Landkarten, kein Essen für uns unglaublich. Sie wussten nicht einmal wo sie eigentlich sind. Die Sonne und die Hitze ist ihnen bereits in den Kopf gestiegen. Mit unserem Dieseltank können wir ihnen nicht weiterhelfen aber wir haben sie bis nach Normanton abgeschleppt. Wir haben uns recht gut auf diese Reise vorbereitet, da kann man nur staunen was sich manche Leute denken. |

Then we arrived at Karumba Point caravan park. That was a shock to the system. It was "chokka-block" full with over 65'ers, all with caravans, boats and a shiny 4WD. Over the last 10 years the Gulf of Carpentaria has been fished-out by thousands of retirees. We we the youngest people in Karumba by about 20 years. The sunset by the local Tavern is not to be missed. The sunsets are well-known and were very good to watch from the Tavern garden while sipping your favourite liquid. |
Nach dem Zwischenstop in Normanton ging es nach Karumba. Karumba liegt am Golf von Karpentaria und hat einen unglaublichen Sonnenuntergang. Diesen haben wir natürlich auch genossen. Weniger wegen dem Sonnenuntergang sondern mehr wegen Barramundi fischen ist dieser Ort sehr beliebt. Der Campingplatz war ein Schock. Ein nagelneuer Allrad neben dem anderen mit recht wenig Platz dazwischen. Wir haben den Altersdurchschnitt sicher um 20 Jahre gesenkt. |

On our way out of Karumba we passed through Normanton again. The biggest attraction in Normanton is the crocodile in the main street. It is apparently the full-size replica of an 8.6 metre crocodile captured on the banks of the Normanton River in 1957. It makes you think of the dinosaurs. |
Dieses 8.6 m grosse Krokodil lebt zwar nicht mehr, wurde aber tatsächlich 1957 am Normanton River von einer Krokodiljägerin erschossen. An der Hauptstrasse von Normanton stellt dieser lebensgrosse Nachbau eine gute Attraktion dar. Unvorstellbar, dass dieses Krokodil wirklich gelebt hat. |
