So here is one of the best parts of the trip so far. Because of the natural beauty of Cape York and the challenging 4WD that the awaited us along the Old Telegraph Line. Cape York is still one of the last frontier 4WD tracks in Australia. Although there is plenty of people driving up there, it is still very remote. We started out from Cooktown and headed "bush" straight away along the Battlecamp Road. This was the original track that led to the goldfields of Palmer River in the early 1920's. Now with a 4WD we passed the homestead ruins, that used to take weeks to reach on foot. We were headed for the Lakefield National Park on the south-eastern side of Cape York. From the numerous camping areas, we stayed at Hanesh Waterhole. This was recommended by the ranger, who informed us about the 3 crocodiles living in the waterhole next to the camp site. In the morning we saw a crocodile sunning himself on the opposite bank. |
Mit dem Verlassen von Cooktown verlassen wir auch die Asphaltstrassen. Die nächste Schotterstrasse - Battle Camp Road - führt uns in den Lakefield National Park. Die Schönheiten in Lakefield National Park bestehen aus Wasserlöchern bzw. 'billabongs' nicht zum Schwimmen geeignet wegen Salzwasserkrokodilen aber dafür zum Fischen. Eine andere 'Schönheit' sind hunderte und tausende an Termitenhügeln. Diese Termitenhügel sind einfach unglaublich. Termiten sind tagsüber nicht zu finden da sie das Sonnenlicht nicht 'vertragen'. Das ist wahrscheinlich auch der Grund, dass die Termitenhügel aussen wie von einer Schlammschicht eingebacken sind. Von den Termitenhügeln gibt es allerlei Formen, Farben und auch Grössen. Manche sind nur ein paar cm hoch, andere reichen bis über das Auto hinauf. Von der Form sind manche eher knollig und andere haben ganz feine Flächen, die Nord-Süd und Ost-West ausgerichtet sind. |

Lakefield National Park was quite dry when we drove through. The 2005 wet season across northern Australia was not very wet, and we saw that in the vegetation. Not very wet means that they probably had 3.5 metres of rain instead of the usual 5 to 6 metres of rain. Up in the tropics they talk in metres of rain and not millimetres. The waterholes had water, but after a good wet season it must be much greener. In the north of Lakefield National Park we stopped by Low Lake (picture above). This is a large lake with many birds and full of water lilies. Very nice spot. We couldn't see any crocodiles, but I am sure they are there. |
Lakefield National Park ist mehr oder weniger der Einstieg auf Cape York bzw. auf die Halbinsel Cape York. Die Strassen sind relativ schlecht aber dafür ist die Landschaft wunderschön. Die Wasserlöcher belohnen mit wunderschönen Pflanzen und unzähligen Wasservögeln. Auch wenn die Temperaturen zum Schwimmen einladen, die Krokodile halten uns davon ab. Wir haben zwar keines im Low Lake gesehen aber im Land der Krokodile sagt man: 'Mach Dir keine Sorgen um die Krokodile die Du siehst. Mach Dir Sorgen um die Krokodile, die Du nicht siehst!' |

Heading north from Lakefield National Park, we found a great overnight camping spot on the Stewart River (picture above). This was a little off the main road north, but well worth the extra 6 km. Beautiful spot. The next night we also camp in a sandy river bed at Archer River. This was even nicer, and a great place to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. The water is clear and running and too shallow for crocodiles. We had a bit of a swim and a fire in the evening. We were now about half way up Cape York. |
Wir hatten einen wunderschönen Zeltplatz an Stewart River - und es wurde uns auch versichert, dass wir beruhigt schlafen können ohne Krokodile. Was für einen schöneren Platz hätten wir uns wünschen können für unseren ersten Hochzeitstag, als Archer River. Wir schlafen direkt neben dem Fluss - auch hier zu flach für Krokodile - machen ein Feuer wo wir unser Essen kochen und Karl spielt Gitarre. Hier beginnt der wahre Trip nach Cape York. |
