We were quite glad to get away from Karumba. There were too many tourists with shiny 4WD's. We were out of place because the Troopy was brown with thick dirt. It badly needed a wash, but we still had over 1000 km of gravel roads to drive. So why bother ! After Karumba and Normanton we followed the Savannah Way west. We camped overnight on the banks of the Leichhardt Falls. There was no water running over the falls (dry season), but they were still beautiful. We also saw a crocodile in the pools at Leichhardt Falls, so no swimming. |
Nach ein paar Kilometer Asphalt Strassen rund um Karumba und Normanton sind wir wieder auf Schotterstrassen unterwegs. Wir fahren entlang vom Savannah Way der von Cairns im Osten bis nach Broome im Westen führt. Die Nacht haben wir bei Leichhardt Falls verbracht. Einige Felslöcher laden zum Schwimmen ein, aber nachdem wir ein Krokodil entdeckt haben ist das Schwimmen gestrichen. Wasserfall gibt es zur Zeit keinen, jedoch lassen die dunklen Stellen auf den Felsen die Wassermassen in der Regenzeit erahnen. |

After Leichhardt Falls we drove through Burketown and stopped for a quick look around, then headed south to Lawn Hill National Park. A lot of people had told us not to miss Lawn Hill. It is about 100 km south of the Savannah Way road, but it is a nice spot to visit. The gorge is very picturesque and we rented a canoe and paddled through the first gorge. Unfortunately, the rental canoes are no longer permitted in the second gorge, so we walked the track along the second gorge and up to a high lookout for some impressive views. |
Ein Pflichtbesuch auf dieser Strecke ist Lawn Hill National Park. Auch wenn es ein kleiner Umweg ist, zahlt es sich auf jeden Fall aus. Ein Fluss führt durch eine Schlucht, die man am besten mit dem Kanu früh am Morgen erkundet. Die Schlucht ist wunderschön und das morgendliche Sonnenlicht lässt die Felswand besonders schön erstrahlen. Es gibt mehr als eine Schlucht, jedoch kann man nur in einer Schlucht mit den gemieteten Kanus paddeln. Wir fahren mit dem Kanu bis zum Ende und gehen zu Fuss weiter zum Aussichtspunkt über die nächste Schlucht.. |

Canoeing through the gorge was a nice way to spend the day. After doing the walk to the lookout from the end of the first gorge we came back and went swimming at the end of the first gorge. There are freshwater crocodiles here. We didn't see any, which was good while we were swimming, but we wanted to see them while we were canoeing. Unfortunately, we didn't get any photos of crocodiles here, so I had to take a photo of the waterlily instead. |
Nach der kleinen Wanderung kam uns eine Erfrischung im Fluss gerade recht. Hier gibt es Krokodile aber nur Frischwasserkrokodile die einem nichts tun. Leider haben wir keines gesehen oder zum Glück. Anstatt von Krokodilen haben jede Menge Fische auf ein paar Krümel gehofft. Eine Art von den Fischen, die Archer Fische, sind wirklich genial. Sie stehen auf 'Frischfleisch'. Aus dem Wasser spucken sie auf über der Wasseroberfläche fliegenden Insekten und fressen sie, sobald diese auf dem Wasser landen. Sie spucken an die 1.5 Meter aus dem Wasser. |

On the way out of Lawn Hill we camped overnight at Kingfisher Camp. Kingfisher Camp is a property which has set up a camp ground near the Nicholson River. It was a very grassy and shady camp area so we stayed a night. Because of the river and the trees it is a very good place to spot birds. We saw some colourful Rainbow Birds and also the Blue-winged Kookaburra. |
Von Lawn Hill ging es weiter zu Kingfisher Camp am Nicholson River. Der Nicholson River macht diese Gegend in der Regenzeit unpassierbar und ist zur Zeit ein 5 km langer See. Wir haben den Nachmittag damit verbracht Vögel zu beobachten wie blue-winged Kookaburras, Darter und Rainbow Birds. Darter haben einen sehr langen Schnabel mit dem sie die Fische wie einen Dartpfeil durchstechen um sie danach zu verspeisen. |

It was a short but pleasant stay at Kingfisher Camp. We casually packed up the next day and joined the Savannah Way road to the north again, and made our way west. We passed a beautiful black-headed python on the road. We stopped and turned around so we could take a photo. When the Troopy approached the snake (we didn't get out !), the snake moved towards the Troopy in defence. Pretty brave snake to take on a Troopy. We left him in piece after the photo. The Black-headed python is actually a harmless snake to humans, but we never take any chances. |
Um Australien zu sehen muss man immer wieder einige Kilometer hinter sich bringen. Wenn dann eine Schlange über die Strasse schleicht ist das ein guter Grund um für ein paar Fotos umzudrehen. Die Spur von dieser schwarz köpfigen Python ist noch ganz frisch im Sand auf der Strasse. Pythons sind Würgeschlangen und für den Menschen nicht gefährlich. Wir haben jedoch nicht schlecht gestaunt, als diese Python versucht das Auto zu attackieren. Ein Grund mehr um nicht auszusteigen und dieses wunderschöne Exemplar vom Auto aus zu betrachten. |
