Our next stop up the coast from Airlie Beach was Townsville. Townsville is the main supply centre for outback Queensland. The road goes west at Townsville to Mt Isa and north to Cairns and Cape York. We are heading to Cairns and Cape York and will go outback again after that. Townsville was more a rest stop for us. We stayed in a caravan park west of the city which was quite nice but right on the busy Ingham Road. Lots of trucks 24 hours a day. But Townsville was nice. There are some very nice cafés along the foreshore. We even found a "C" Bar - probably nicer than the one in Dornbirn. We had a coffee there overlooking the ocean. Just behind Townsville there is Castle Hill which has great views over the city and bay. From Townsville it's just a stones throw to Magnetic Island. We contemplated going to Magnetic Island for the day, but decided against it. We still had the images of our stay on South Molle Island in our head. |
Von Airlie Beach geht es nach Townsville. Der Campingplatz hat eine sehr schöne 'Camperskitchen' - eine überdachte Küche im Freien. Die Unterschiede können sehr gross sein. Wir kochen unser Abendessen und haben die Küche bald für uns alleine. Wir sind zwar auf einem Campingplatz und es ist kaum zu glauben, aber so gut wie in jedem Wohnwagen und sogar Zelt läuft der Fernseher. Townsville hat sich sehr viel Mühe gegeben, die Esplanade schön herzurichten. Man kann auf etwa 2 km spazieren gehen, sein Mittagessen auf einem der zahlreichen bereitgestellten Gasgrillern bzw. GasBBQ kochen, sich sportlich beim Tennis, Basketball oder anderem Sport betätigen oder einfach Installation von Edelstahl Kokosnüssen unter den Palmen geniessen. Wir konnten nicht widerstehen und haben bei einem Kaffe die Aussicht auf Magnetic Island von der 'C-Bar' genossen und schwelgen in Erinnerungen an Dornbirn. |

We spent a full day in Townsville just walking along the foreshore and looking around town. The foreshore extends 1 or 2 km from the city centre. Apart from the cafés, there is also exercise and play equipment along the way. It's a good place to do some jogging or just enjoy the "Sky Surfer" that I tried out. Not bad, but as the sign said "For teenagers only", I was a little oversized. |
Karl hat sich ein wenig sportlich betätigt und diesen 'sky surfer' ausprobiert. Er meinte, es war nicht schlecht. Natürlich kann es nicht richtig funktionieren, der Spielplatz ist nur für Teenager gedacht. Die sind wahrscheinlich auch nicht so erschöpft nach ein bisschen Spiel. |

Between Townsville and Cairns there is waterfall after waterfall at every turn off along the main road. We had been told "When you see a waterfall sign - turn off and see it". This is what we started to do, but soon realized it would have taken us 2 weeks to get to Cairns. But 2 of the best waterfalls along the way are by far the Jourama Falls and Wallaman Falls. Try and see it in that order because Wallaman Falls are spectacular. Jourama Falls are also great with water running down the rock face through pools and rock crevaces. The short walk into Jourama Falls is across a creek which can be up to the knees at certain time in the year. We had it easy, just leap frogging over rocks. |
Von Townsville nach Cairns ist es nur ein Katzensprung von etwa 200 km aber es ist sehr einfach ein paar Tage oder Wochen hier zu verbringen. So alle paar Kilometer kann man einem Wegweiser zu einem Wasserfall folgen. Einer davon war Jourama Falls. Zuerst geht es durch einen Fluss, der wenn er anschwillt das Überqueren sehr schwer bzw. fast unmöglich machen kann. Ein Aufstieg bei tropischen Temperaturen und ein wunderbarer Wasserfall. Bei der Weite in Australien muss man einfach Panorama Fotos machen, hier wird es noch interessanter. Das Panorama Foto längs und hoch gehen. Eine Matrix an Fotos vereint - Karl hat das mittlerweile sehr gut im Griff. |

One of the most magnificent was Wallaman Falls. With a 268 metre drop and surrounded by rainforest, it is very impressive. It is often covered by fog, which makes the 70 km drive into the falls a little less impressive. We were extremely lucky. We got there in the evening and had beautiful views in the evening sun, and camped overnight for more fantastic views the next day. We walked down the steep 2 km track, through thick rainforest, to the base of the waterfall, which was just amazing. I lost count of how many rainbows we saw in the sprays of water. If you look carefully you can see the rainbow in one of the photos below. |
Der nächste Wasserfall war noch viel gigantischer. Wallaman Falls ist mit 268 m der höchste Wasserfall in Australien. Im nachmittäglichen Licht ist der Wasserfall wunderschön da der Fels in rot-braun Tönen schimmert. Der Aussichtspunkt ist gleich neben dem Parkplatz aber wirklich beeindruckend ist es am Fuss nach einem 2 km langen Abstieg, der es beim Aufstieg in sich hat. Aus dem Regenwald beim Abstieg kann man immer wieder ein paar Blicke auf den Wasserfall erhaschen. In dem feinen Wasser ist ein Regenbogen nach dem anderen zu erblicken. |

After Wallaman Falls we drove further north towards Cairns. Almost every road in north Queensland is a corridor through sugar cane fields. In fact, there is so much sugar cane, Australia is one of the biggest exporters of sugar in the world. Sometimes the air smells sweet when you drive by the processing mills. As a child, I remember driving up here with my grandparents and grabbing cut pieces of sugar cane from the roadside fields, and sucking on the cane for the syrup out as we drove along. They were the days when they used to burn the fields before harvesting, but most of it is done by "Green Harvesters" now, so they don't have to burn it. |
Queensland ist ein reines Zuckerrohrgebiet. Das saftige Grün von den Zuckerrohrfeldern entlang der Strassen ist sehr schön anzuschauen. Kein Wunder, dass es in Australien sehr viel verschiedene Arten von Braunem Zucker und Rohzucker gibt. Der Zucker wird von hier in die ganze Welt exportiert. Es war sehr interessant, in dem australischen Zucker Museum mehr über Anbau und Weiterverarbeitung zu erfahren. Ein paar Tage auf so einem Zuckerrohrfeld und man braucht kein Fitnescenter mehr. Heutzutage wird natürlich auch alles maschinell gemacht und nicht mehr händisch geschnitten. |

Just one thing more I have to mention... on the way up to Cairns, we stopped in Ingham to buy some groceries at a small shop in the main street. It was like going to Italy. Fresh fruit & vegetables, olives, cheeses and salami, etc. We bought a great Italian salami among other things. We have to do that more often. |
In Ingham waren wir ganz erfreut am Sonntag einen Feinkostladen zu finden der offen hat und vor allem ein grosses Angebot an Salami, verschiedene Sorten von leckerem Käse, Oliven, Pasta... Wir sind uns vorgekommen wie im Himmel oder wie in Italien. |
